Google AI Max Upgrade 2026: 8 Essential Steps for Canadian Advertisers

Google AI Max Upgrade 2026: 8 Essential Steps for Canadian Advertisers

The Google AI Max upgrade started in September 2026. Google is moving Search campaigns that use automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match into AI Max, and Dynamic Search Ads follow in February 2027. If you run Google Ads for a Canadian business, your campaigns may change settings without you touching them. Here is what changes, and what to do first.

What AI Max actually does

AI Max for Search is a set of three features that sit on top of a normal Search campaign.

  • Search term matching finds queries beyond your keyword list, based on your landing pages and ads.
  • Text customization writes and adjusts headlines and descriptions to fit each search.
  • Final URL expansion sends people to the page on your site that Google thinks fits the query best.

Keywords still matter. They act as a signal of intent, and AI Max uses them together with your site content to decide where to show.

What changes in your account

If you use automatically created assets

Search term matching and text customization turn on by default. Google will write more of your ad copy.

If you use campaign-level broad match

Search term matching turns on. In practice, reach gets wider than broad match alone.

If you run Dynamic Search Ads

Dynamic ad groups become standard ad groups. All three features switch on, and your existing URL rules carry over.

The risk for small Canadian accounts

For a business spending $10 to $50 a day in the GTA, wider matching can use up the budget on searches that do not convert. A plumber in Mississauga does not want clicks from people looking for plumbing jobs or DIY videos.

Text customization can also write claims you would not approve, such as a price or a service area you do not cover. For regulated fields like mortgages, immigration or legal services, that is a compliance problem, not only a quality problem.

How to prepare for the Google AI Max upgrade

  1. Check which campaigns use ACA, campaign-level broad match or DSA. Those are the ones Google will change.
  2. Upgrade on your own terms before the automatic switch. You pick the settings instead of accepting the defaults.
  3. Run Google’s one-click experiment. Split traffic between the current setup and AI Max, and compare cost per lead for at least two to four weeks.
  4. Add URL exclusions for careers, blog, privacy and other pages that should never be a landing page.
  5. Add brand exclusions and your existing negative keyword lists at the account level.
  6. Turn off text customization if you work in a regulated industry, or review every asset it creates.
  7. Confirm conversion tracking is clean. AI Max optimizes toward what you count, so counting page views as leads will mislead it.
  8. Review the search terms report weekly for the first month.

Where AI Mode ads fit in

At Google Marketing Live 2026, Google showed ads inside AI Mode, including conversational ads and sponsored placements in AI-generated recommendation lists. It also announced a Business Agent for lead ads that replaces a static form with a chat. These launched or are testing in the U.S. first.

Google said the path to these placements runs through Performance Max, AI Max for Search and broad match. Canadian advertisers who set up AI Max carefully now will be ready when these formats arrive here, according to this Google Marketing Live recap.

Should every account turn it on?

Good fit

  • Accounts with at least 30 conversions a month to learn from.
  • Sites with many clear service or product pages.
  • Advertisers already using broad match with Smart Bidding and seeing good results.

Poor fit, or proceed slowly

  • Budgets under $20 a day with few conversions.
  • Thin websites with one or two pages.
  • Regulated industries where ad wording needs approval.

For small budgets, we often keep exact and phrase match campaigns running next to a controlled AI Max test. You can see how we set up Google and Meta ads for Canadian businesses.

A sample 30-day AI Max test plan

This is how we would run a Google AI Max upgrade test for a GTA service business spending about $30 a day.

Week Action
Week 1 Audit conversions, add URL and brand exclusions, load negative lists, start a 50/50 experiment
Week 2 Review search terms, add negatives, pause any auto-written asset that makes wrong claims
Week 3 Compare cost per lead and lead quality with sales or front-desk notes
Week 4 Apply the winner, or keep AI Max on a smaller share of budget and retest

What to measure

  • Cost per lead, not cost per click. AI Max often brings cheaper clicks that convert less.
  • The share of search terms that match services you sell.
  • Lead quality, based on how many leads book a call or become customers.
  • Which landing pages Google chose, and whether they convert.

If cost per lead rises more than 20% with no gain in lead volume, keep the tighter setup and test again after you add more conversion data.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Google AI Max upgrade cost extra?

No. There is no fee for AI Max. You pay for clicks as usual, but wider matching can change how fast your budget is spent.

Does AI Max work with Maximize Conversions?

Yes. AI Max is built to work with Smart Bidding, such as Maximize Conversions or target CPA.

Can I opt out of the Google AI Max upgrade?

You can control which features are on after the upgrade. Campaigns using ACA, broad match or DSA will still move to AI Max on Google’s schedule.

Will my keywords stop working?

No. Keywords stay in place and still guide matching, while AI Max adds extra queries.

Can I still create a new DSA campaign?

No. New DSA campaign creation ends in September 2026.
